Jobs to tackle in the garden during April

Now that the weather is warmer and brighter, it should now be more pleasant to tackle some of those garden chores.

Mow the lawn with the mower blades set on medium height. If lawns are looking a little bare, sow grass seed. April is the month to apply lawn fertiliser, followed be a selective weedkiller two weeks later.

Prune lavender and forsythia.

Apply a mulch to roses and use weedkiller to keep down weeds.

Support perennials with canes or bamboo. Feed pinks and carnations with a general fertiliser.  Make sure tall lilies are supported by stakes.

Plant dahlia tubers and harden off chrysanthemum cuttings.

Finish sowing hardy and half-hardy annuals. Move established seedlings to a cold frame and keep an eye on them for aphid infestations.

Dead head early flowering spring bulbs and plant gladioli and acidantheras.

If you have a pond, then it’s time to plant water lilies and other water plants. Divide any lilies that are overgrown.

If you have fruit trees, then you can protect trees in flower from late frosts with netting. Begin spraying, if needed, but not during the blossom stage.
