A Guide to Growing Cyclamen

Cyclamen is a good way of adding colour to a winter garden. It will keep flowering when little else is, making it popular amongst gardeners as the weather gets colder. Here is a guide to successfully growing cyclamen:

  • 1. You should plant the tubers in holes that are 3-5cm deep. If they are planted too deep, you are in danger of them not flowering.
  • 2. They need to be grown somewhere with a little bit of shade, away from direct sunlight.
  • 3. Make sure the soil is moderately fertile and well draining, avoiding excess moisture during the summer. Use some mulch as well.
  • 4. Be careful that the tubers do not get dug up by animals like squirrels.

If you choose a hardy type of cyclamen, they are good to plant in borders that receive a lot of shade. They will being to naturalise if you leave them to grow for a long time.
